So you’re excited about the Google Android One platform, and want to buy one the three phones launched by Micromax, Karbonn and Spice. But just before that, you want to check out other options.
Here’s a low down of the alternatives to Google One in the market, all of which have the same quad-core processor, same 1 GB RAM, same Android KitKat 4.4 and the same 850×480 pixel display resolution.
Lenovo A328, price Rs 6,500
The Lenovo A328 is the Google One phone that isn’t. In other words, it has exactly the same specifications as the other Google One phones except that it has a 4.8 inch display while the others have a 4.5 inch one. Other than that, and the fact that it’s a Chinese brand, it’s practically the same as any Android One phone that is one the market at present. Even the camera resolutions are the same: 2 megapixels at the front and 5 MP at the back. What makes it worth consideration? The slightly bigger screen and the brand value of Lenovo. We also believe that out of all the alternatives to Google Android One phones listed here, this is the strongest contender yet. Launch in India will happen next week.
Intex Aqua Style Pro, price Rs 6100
Another phone that has virtually the same specifications as Android One phones like Karbonn Sparkle V, Micromax Canvas A1, and Spice Dream UNO. What makes it different is the 8 megapixel camera at the back and the slightly lower price. This one has 4 GB of internal memory.
XOLO Q510s, price Rs 6,300
Okay, we’re cheating a little bit here as the XOLO Q510s does not have a 4.5 inch display, but a 4 inch one. In all other ways, it’s as good as the others. This phone comes with 8 GB of internal memory.
Spice Stellar 497, price Rs 5,300
Again, very similar specs. The main difference is in the price and in the resolution of the back camera, which in this case is only 3.2 MP compared to 5 MP in Android One phones. Also, this one has only half a GB of RAM compared to the others.
Lava Iris 460, price Rs 6,500
Another strong contender. Has a 4.5-inch IPS LCD touchscreen, Android 4.4, 3G and a 5 MP camera. Looks great. The only downside is that it has a dual-core instead of a quad-core processor.
Micromax Fire 2 A104 & Canvas Fire A104, price Rs 6400
Frankly, we would not advise you to buy these models over the Micromax Canvas A1. But if you do decide to check them out, please remember that since everything’s the same, it would be wiser to go with the Android One platform due to the availability of software upgrades.
Lava Iris 460, price Rs 6,500
Slightly more expensive, but the phone has got decent user reviews. Again, we’re including it as it is a different brand from the others, the Android One disclaimer applies.
