Bharatiya Janata Party put up a stronger performance in city councils than in towns and villages in Karnataka local body elections.
According to the results as of 11:35 AM, the BJP was leading in or had won 352 seats out of the total of 927 seats in 29 city councils for which elections were held.
Congress was leading in, or had won, 301 seats, while JDS was at 107.
Others had 167 seats.
Out of the 29 city councils, the BJP is set to form government in 10 and the Congress in 5.
The saffron party has done better in these bigger cities than in smaller towns and villages, where the Congress was leading.
For example, out of the 53 town municipalities, the Congress is set to rule 19 on its own, while the BJP will rule 12 and JDS will rule 8.
In the remaining 14, the parties will have to form some kind of alliance to set up a government. The JDS and the Congress already have an alliance at the state level.
On an overall level, the results are encouraging for the Congress Party ahead of the 2019 general elections, as they indicate that people continue to back it several months after it formed a coalition government with JDS.
The performance, meanwhile, is largely along expected lines for JDS, which is strongest in its belt of Mandya and Hassan districts.
