PVR Ltd, India’s largest cinema chain, became even bigger today with the opening of a 5-screen multiplex at Vellore near Chennai, taking the total screens to 630.
The latest property has been opened at Velocity, Silk Mill, Gandhinagar and has a total seating capacity of 906 and an area of 24,000 sq. ft..
Vellore is an education hub, and home to many colleges and the property will target both students as well as residents, the company said.
“The brand new multiplex is equipped with world-class technology of BARCO 4K projection system, which delivers superb brightness and vibrant colors to ensure a razor-sharp picture quality,” it said.
It also comes equipped with Dolby 7.1 surround sound and 3D capable screens.
The billing counter is enabled with ‘quick-tix’ to reduce queues, it said.
The company said the theater has an “innovative seating arrangement” that “reinvents the entertainment with sheer comfort and recreation”, without giving details.
“Designated as Vellore’s biggest cinema with 5 screens; this new property falls in line with the company’s’ expansion plans to propagate world-class cinema viewing in tier-ll cities,” said Sanjeev Kumar Bijli, Joint Managing Director, PVR Ltd.
With this, PVR now has 22 screens in 4 properties in Tamil Nadu; and a total of 160 screens in 24 properties in South India. That’s about one fourth of the 630 screens it has in 135 properties across 52 cities in total.
“Given the mix of right demographics and an appetite of high-quality film viewing experience, we are confident that our efforts will be appreciated,” said CEO Gautam Dutta, adding that the company plans to expand even more in South India.
