Jain Irrigation Systems Limited said it has won a Rs 288 cr project from the Karnataka government to set up a drip irrigation system for 5,000 farmers in Chikmaglur district.
The project involves lifting water from Upper Bhadra Canal and and using the same to irrigate 16,193 acres using drip irrigation.
The contract, won through competitive bidding, also requires the company to fill 59 irrigation tanks in Tarikere taluka of Chikkamagaluru district.
The company also has to create a pump house, electrical substation and form ‘water user associations’ as well as provide training to farmers on how to use the system.
“This project is planned for improving water use efficiency in canal command areas through conduit distribution and use of Drip Irrigation system from main canal onwards,” Jain Irrigation Systems said.
The company expects to complete the project in 24 months. The company will operate and maintain the system for 5 year and hand it over to the government.
Jain Irrigations has over 10,500 associates and revenue of over $1 bln. It also has factories in 30 locations across the globe.
