Tata Power said its Strategic Engineering Division, along with partner DSIT Solutions Ltd, received a contract to supply Portable Diver Detection Sonar (PDDS) to the Indian Navy.
The deal is one of the the largest in the world for such systems, it said.
The detection systems will largely be manufactured in India at the Tata Power SED’s Karnataka factories under ToT and support from Israel-based DSIT Solutions Ltd, which will supply the technology.
“This Contract is a part of “Make in India” initiative and the second contract under the MoD procurement category “Buy and Make (India),” it said.
“In the last three years, we have committed the largest Private Sector investments in Defence Manufacturing at Vemagal in Karnataka,” said Benny Sela, CEO of DSIT.
“We see this order as an important vote of confidence in our superior technology by the Indian Navy choosing us to protect their fleet against underwater threats with the PointShield Portable Diver Detection Sonar.
“We are looking forward to work closely with Tata Power SED and deliver to the Indian Navy high performance and best quality systems. We look at this project as an opportunity to launch a long and fruitful cooperation between the companies for the benefit of our joint customer,” he added.
Under the new procurement rules put in place by the Narendra Modi regime, defence equipment produced in India is given a higher priority, even when the technology is supplied by foreign firms.
The deal also comes in the context of increasing co-operation between India and Israel in defence matters.
