Tata Elxsi, the hardware design company from the Tata stable, has tied up with Unity Technologies to set up a center that will develop solutions based on the Unity visualization engine.

The Unity platform is arguably the most widely used engine for developing mobile phone games and can also be used to develop 2D and 3D content on a variety of plaforms including computers. It is estimated to reache around 2.5 billion devices across the world.

Unity is used to author more than two thirds of all AR/VR content, the companies said.

Using a readymade platform like Unity cuts down on the time required to create visualization solutions, such as games and content. The two companies will set up a center for excellence in India.

The companies said they will create a new center to focus on emerging areas of augmented and virtual reality.

“Augmented and virtual reality technologies are the next generation of computing. Tata Elxsi foresees usage of these advanced platforms across various industries and verticals,” said Anil Sondur – Executive Vice President, Tata Elxsi.

“Tata Elxsi is already in a leadership position in the use of these technologies for several industries and has used Unity as a development platform. This global partnership will enable Tata Elxsi to support new applications for customers across industries worldwide,” he added.

The center will focus on architectural visualisation, film and entertainment, automotive, engineering and manufacturing, as well as government.

Quentin Staes-Polet, Director South Asia Pacific, Unity Technologies said the engine is finding new applications in the area of industrial design and training, besides the traditional role it plays in creating entertainment content.

“AR/VR technologies are fast transforming how businesses innovate, collaborate and communicate,” he said. The collaboration proves that the platform is not just for games, animation and film, but also for other industries.

Tata Elxsi has been helping clients globally to create experiences and workflow for customers across industries.

“In an era where VR/AR applications are changing countless industries – from education, to manufacturing, architecture and art – Unity is enabling the developers of tomorrow achieve greater success today.”

The center will bring together developers, researchers and industry stakeholders, Tata Elxsi said.

“The Unity-Tata Elxsi partnership is significant as it builds the single largest pool of Unity developers in India. This new CoE establishes a global innovation platform to help customers accelerate digital transformation,” it said.
