Vodafone India offers unlimited downloading for 5 hours at Rs 29

Taking a leaf from new entrant Reliance Jio’s playbook, Vodafone India has announced a ‘truly unlimited’ five-hour data pack for Rs 29.

The pack, called Vodafone SuperNight, will work between 1 AM and 6 AM and is open for prepaid customers only. It will work on both 3G and 4G connections and be available for recharge from Monday, 19 June 2017.

“The pack can be activated any time of the day but will be applicable only during the subsequent five hours between 1 am and 6 am,” the company said.

“Further, customers can make every night a SuperNight with unlimited repeat purchase of the Vodafone SuperNight and enjoy data at just Rs 6 per hour,” it said.

Reliance Jio, which has taken the market by storm, had made its entry with plans that allowed unlimited downloads between 2 AM and 5 AM, allowing many users to download dozens of high-definition movies in one single night.

Such deals help create consumer goodwill without degrading the experience for higher-end customers. Vodafone has its 4G services on FDD technology, and its bandwidth is likely to range between 5-15 Mbps in most areas.

At an average of 10 Mbps, a user can download 4.5 GB per hour, or 27 GB per night. This works out to a cost of about Rs 1.30 per GB.

“These SuperNight packs will enable users to download as much data as they want for five hours at a fixed, nominal price,” the company said.

The SuperNight packs can be purchased via digital channels as well as all physical retail shops.

Customers can also dial *444*4# to activate the pack. “The benefits can be enjoyed when connected to Vodafone SuperNet,” it said.

Vodafone recently asked the TRAI to allow it to downgrade the size of videos being watched on its network by its users to keep network congestion low.
