Reliance Jio, the 4G operator is now offering 20% extra data to those who are using its services using a LYF branded handset.
In other words, if you are eligible to get 1 GB of data per day, you will get 1.2 GB per day on a LYF device, and those who are on the 2 GB per day plan will get 2.4 GB every day.
A banner to this effect has been put up on MyLyf website.
Going by the banner, the offer is available only to those who buy the eleven models — priced between Rs 6,600 to 9,700 — against which the offer has been indicated.
Most of these models belong to the ‘Water’ sub-brand. Models that come under categories such as ‘Wind’ do not have the offer mentioned against them on the company’s website.
The latest move comes in the wake of flagging sales and recall of LYF handsets. The handset branded launched by Reliance Retail, a sister concern of the telecom operator, had taken the market by storm with its bundled data offers and affordable price tags.
At a time when 4G phones were priced at Rs 4000 and above, the company offered devices at a starting price of Rs 2,999. Besides, buying a Lyf phone was the only way to get free trial SIMs for the new operator in the initial days.
However, with Jio services becoming accessible on all LTE devices, the attraction of the company’s own handset brand waned.
According to CyberMedia Research, the number of handsets sold under the company’s homegrown brand fell to 7.4 lakh in the first three months of 2017 from 22 lakh in the July to September period of 2016.
Reliance Retail does not manufacture the phones, but contracts the activity to specialists who are mostly based in China.
The phones are created based on prototypes submitted to and approved by the company.
