Vehicle worth Rs 5,000 cr with BS-III certification could not be sold by the deadline of March 31, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers said today.
In addition, it said, the industry sustained a loss of about Rs 1,000-1,500 cr due to the deadline, it said, adding that the total loss was about 6,000-6,500 cr.
Many two-wheeler and car brands had offered steep discounts on the last two days of March to liquidate their stock of BS-III pollution certified vehicles.
This was in reaction to a Supreme Court order that no vehicles without BS-IV certification would be sold in India from Apr 1.
Honda Motorcycles and Scooters, for example, was offering cash back of Rs 22,000 on its BS-III scooters and motorcycles models such as Activa 3G, Dream Yuga and CD 110DX —
price around Rs 50,000 ex-showroom, and on CB Shine priced around Rs 60,000.
Hero MotoCorp offered rebates of Rs 12,500 on its scooters, Rs 7,500 on higher end bikes and Rs 5,000 on commuter bikes.
