Aircel today started offering unlimited calls to any number in the country under two special recharge plans — Rs 12 for one day and Rs 249 for 28 days.
RC12 offers customers with Unlimited Local and STD calling across all networks with a validity of one day.
Unlike earlier packs, the calls are not restricted to other Aircel users.
However, it remains to be seen how successful the new strategy is, given that its partner Reliance Communications, is already giving unlimited calls to any network at Rs 149 per month.
The only difference between what RCom is offering and what Aircel is giving seems to be the unlimited 2G data that is being bundled in the Aircel plan.
2G data is good enough for sending text WhatsApp messages and reading news, but little else, and it remains to be seen how attractive the plan is going to be to potential users.
Aircel has 3G services in around a dozen circles, in addition to having a pan-India 2G presence.
The news has come even as market leader Airtel cut its 4G data rates to Rs 495 per 10 GB, and started offering free calls and data to many of its key customers in attempt to entice them away from Reliance Jio. Jio is giving free data and calls till March 2017.
