Hit by competition from Reliance Jio’s 4G services, Tata DoCoMo has halved the price of its 1 GB 3G pack to just Rs 98 from Rs 195 earlier.
The new pack is being offered under the ‘My Best Offer’ service that users can activate by pressing *123# on their mobile phones.
The company has 3G spectrum in nine circles, including Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Maharashtra & Goa, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh (West).
In addition, the company has also reduced the prices for other packs such as 500 MB, which is now available for 58 compared while it was charging around Rs 128 for 300 MB of 3G data earlier.
The cheapest plan before this was 2 GB for Rs 255.
In addition, it is also offering extra 1 GB of night usage with its 2GB plan in Maharashtra and Goa circle, giving users a total of 3GB of usage for Rs 249.
Tata DoCoMo used to be, at one time, the most affordable provider of 3G data in India along with Aircel Cellular.
However, with the company facing financial difficulties, it has been overtaken by other competitors including Reliance Jio in terms of offering cheap high-speed Internet plans.
In some of its nine circles where the company won spectrum five years ago, the operator has not even been able to cover most of the population using its 3G signal.
There was speculation that the company will sell its 3G spectrum to other operators. However, with increased availability of 3G spectrum, demand for airwaves has gone down.
The company is 26% owned by NTT DoCoMo of Japan, which has expressed an interest in leaving its partnership with Tata.
