Yu Televentures, the sister company of Micromax, is unveiling the price and other specificatios of the most ambitious phone ever launched by an Indian brand in the country – the Yutopia.

“This is the most powerful phone, and it’s from India. I’m underlining it, it’s from India,” said founder Rahul Sharma. Micromax designs most of its phones in India with inputs from its manufacturing partners in China.

The price is expected to be around Rs 25,000, but that detail has been left to the last. The official price of the phone is Rs 24,999, and is available on Amazon India.

The company said it would take this phone and give the customer the next version of this phone, ‘Yutopia 2’, after one year. The customer has to continue paying the EMIs. Sharma did  not clarify how much credit would be attributed to the old model when this swap takes place.

The device comes with a RAM of 4 GB, which is higher than what you find in many phones that cost twice as much as this model. What’s more, the technology used is DD4 and not DD3, which should translate to a faster and more responsive experience, while saving some battery juice.

The back camera has a 77.3 degree wide angle lens, which should help in getting more area in each photo. It also has optical image stabilization and phase detection auto focus of just 0.2 seconds, meaning that as far as the camera is concerned, the Yutopia compares well with any phone in the market.

The phone also comes with a fingerprint scanner at the back.

Display is slightly disappointing because of the size (5.2 inches), but the screen does come with 4 mln pixels or QHD resolution, translating to 565 dots per inch. It is made by SHARP and incorporates one glass solution and offers a contrast of 1000:1.

The screen also comes with Corning Concore glass that is part of the main display itself, reducing its thickness. “With 5 times better indentation threshold, higher transmission performance and 2 times better edge strength, makes Yutopia a force to be reckoned with.”

Because of this, the phone has a thickness of just 7.2 millimeter compared to 9-10 mm for rivals like OnePlus 2.

The chipset and processor are based on Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 platform, while the operating system is based on Android v5.1.1 Lollipop.

The Snapdragon 810 used on the model has four cortex A57 medium power cores of 2 GHz and another four low-power 1.5GHz A53 cores.

yu-yutopia-4The body is made of metal. “Crafted from aircraft grade Aluminium that makes Yutopia 90% stronger than the polycarbonate and sandpaper heroes of the smartphone world. Making it a phone you would not want to mess with,” Yu said.

“Armour-like strength fused within the contours of a sleek, futuristic machine, Yutopia’s elegant yet powerful design is borne of an alloy of Aluminium and Magnesium that is also used in airplanes. The unique design brings with it ideal antenna reception and temperature regulation, thus increasing performance.”

One of the advantages of the metal design is that the company is using the body as an antenna, which should improve reception.

“Antenna bands (are) integrated seamlessly into the chassis, ‘No Signal’ is never an option,” it said.

Internal memory is 32 GB, and 128 GB SD card is supported. Of the two SIM slots, one is micro SIM while the other is nano.

The removable battery has a capacity of 3 Ah, which should give a screen-on time of around 5-6 hours. Backup time claimed by the company is 300 hours and talk time promised is 8 hours. That should translate to about 4-4.5 hours of web-browsing using high-speed cellular data.

Other features include quick charge support brought in by Snapdragon which ensures full charge in 1 hour.

The phone also comes with DTS sound and Tri-MIC Technology.

While recording a video or a song on your Yutopia, Tri-Mic technology allows for High Quality Stereo Recording while also helping in active noise cancellation, the company said.

Yu has a dedicated website for registering those interested in buying the device.

Interestingly, the use of Snapdragon processor could give the company relief from having to pay Ericsson royalties. Yu has been under attack from Ericsson for not paying royalties even as its sister firm Micromax pays the same.

The company also launched its own services platform called Around Yu, built into the operating system.
