Larsen & Toubro has set up a Global Internet of Things Solutions Centre in Bangalore to cater to the fast-growing sector.
“The facility will demonstrate IoT solutions for different industry verticals and give customers an opportunity to see the value addition that IoT offers,” the company said.
Internet of Things refers to connecting physical infrastructure and equipment to each other and to computers for monitoring and control.
This includes facilities such as monitoring of power meters, traffic lights, factory equipment and even household items such as refrigerators.
Connecting them to the Internet helps monitor the health and function of such equipment. Any deterioration or deviation in their performance is then flagged for human attention, or rectified automatically.
It can also help in pushing automation. For example, a connection refrigerator may be set to order milk or veggies everytime the milk or vegetable content falls below a threshold.
Companies such as Infosys, TCS and HCL Tech are major actors in this area from India. L&T also has a subsidiary, L&T Infotech, which works in this area.
However, the Bangalore center has been opened under L&T Technology Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro. L&T is India’s biggest construction company.
The facility is a collaboration with US-based Cisco.
“The setup employs Cisco’s IoT infrastructure products like Enterprise and Industrial routers, switches and UCS servers and L&T Technology Services’ technology capabilitiesm” the Indian company said.
L&T Technology Services offers design and development solutions throughout the entire product development chain across various industries such as Industrial Products, Medical Devices, Transportation, Telecom and Hi-tech and Process Industry.
