Moto X Play has been priced at an unexpectedly low price of Rs 18,499 — about Rs 6,500 below its expected price tag of Rs 25,000.
With this, Motorola has again regained its reputation for offering decent hardware at affordable prices.
The US firm had lost that image after it launched the third generation Moto G with 720p displays at about 30% higher prices than what similar phones were being sold for in India at the time.
The biggest casualty of the low price of Moto X Play would be the OnePlus Two, which currently has a very, very long waiting list of interested buyers.
The phones are very similar, though there are some key differences as well — particularly when it comes to fingerprint sensors and camera resolutions.
The India version of Moto X Play offers internal memory of 32 GB, and gives the user the option of extending the storage memory with the use of a MicroSD card. OnePlus Two does not have a card slot.
The X Play has a 21 MP camera but does not have a fingerprint scanner. It comes with 2 GB of RAM and a mid-range octa-core Snapdragon 615 chipset.
The phone’s 3.6 Ah battery gives a backup of 30 hours, the company said.
The aggressive pricing could also hit other mid-range players as well. Meizu MX5, for example, could also see some impact, though the phone offers both a fingerprint scanner and a full-HD Super AMOLED display at just Rs 1,500 more. However, it suffers from limited, 16 GB non-expandable memory.
