Government of India owned construction and manufacturing firm Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) said it received an order worth Rs 440 crore from Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) for the erection work of the upcoming 2×1000 Megawatt Turbine Generator (TG) island units at Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project in Tamil Nadu.
BHEL also emerged as the lowest bidder for the erection of the reactor side equipment for the same project.
Island mode operation relates to those power plants that operate in isolation from the main network, such as the national or local electricity grid.
The plant, set up in association with Russia, is the single largest nuclear power station in India, situated in Koodankulam in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.
Construction on the plant began on 31 March 2002, but faced several delays due to opposition from local fishermen. Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant is scheduled to have six VVER-1000 reactors built in collaboration with Atomstroyexport, the Russian state company and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), with an installed capacity of 6,000 MW of electricity.
BHEL had successfully executed the erection work of TG island for Units 1&2 at Kudankulam.
