Larsen & Toubro, India’s largest construction company, said it won a contract from the union government to build three 10-storeyed buildings that form part of the new central secretariat.
The union government is current redeveloping the central vista — the hub of administration in India that houses most of the major ministries and departments of the central government.
The exact value of the construction contract was not announced by the company, but it did say that it was between Rs 2,500 cr and Rs 5,000 cr.
The buildings that L&T will build are called Buildings 1, 2 & 3, and form part of the ‘Common Central Secretariat’ on plot no. 137, the company said.
The buildings will have two basements, a ground floor, an upper ground floor and six storeys above that, taking the total number of floors to ten.
It will be completed in 24 months.
The buildings will contain cabins, cubicles and open work halls for secretaries, additional and joint secretaries, deputy secretaries, directors, under secretaries, section officers and assistant secretaries to various ministries and departments of the union government.
The work involves demolition, civil works, finishes and external development. L&T will also provide furniture, and be charge of operating and maintaining these buildings for five years.
“This project will be one of its kind, in terms of sheer scale of work to be executed within stringent timelines with highest safety Et quality standards,” the company said.
The central vista project includes the redevelopment of India’s parliament and the creation of an efficient and sustainable central secretariat to house all the ministries of the Government of India.
