Maruti Suzuki said it has sold 3 lakh units of Vitara Brezza, the most popular SUV to have hit the Indian market ever.
Given that the model was launched in March 2016, this works out to average sales of 10,700 units per month.
The number of cars that sell above 10,000 units in India can be counted on the fingers of a single hand. Brezza’s success also indicates that consumer preferences are shifting away from the mini segment, such as Alto, and the compact segment, such as Swift, to the SUV and sedan segments.
The success of the model had helped Maruti Suzuki overtake Mahindra & Mahindra as India’s No.1 SUV maker.
The company said the introduction of ‘auto gear shift’ technology two months ago has given a fillip to the sales of the higher end models of Vitara Brezza in recent days.
“The contribution of the top variants in the total sales of Vitara Brezza has zoomed to 56%,” said RS Kalsi. who heads marketing and sales at the automaker.
The model competes with SUVs like Mahindra’s TUV 300 (Plus), Tata Nexon, Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport.
Vitara Brezza offers safety features like ISOFIX child restraint system, high speed warning alert, dual air bags, ABS with EBD, reverse parking sensors and front seat belt pre-tensioners and force limiters on all variants.
