Construction major Larsen & Tourbro said it has won a Rs 1,3960-cr contract from the West Bengal government to build a six-lane bridge across river Hooghly on the northern border of Calcutta.
The bridge will built at Kalyani, which forms the northern most boundary of Kolkata metropolitan area.
It will supplement the existing Iswar Gupta bridge, also known as Kalyani bridge, which was built in 1989.
The new bridge will be located about 50 km from the center of the city towards the north, the company said.
“The entire length of the project is 21 km which consists of a six-lane extra-dosed bridge of 714m, widening of the existing road corridor into a 4/6 lane divided carriageway and an elevated corridor of about 20km,” it said.
The Hooghly river has more than a dozen bridges across it.
The most famous of the bridge is the Rabindra Setu or Howrah Bridge, which connects Howrah with the city. Built by the British, it was inaugurated in 1943.
