Reliance Industries said it commissioned its third and last crystallization train at its paraxylene complex at Jamnagar, making the company the biggest manufacturer of the key ingredient used in plastic production.
Paraxylene is used to make intermediate chemicals that are then used to manufacture polyethylene terephthalate or PET. PET bottles are widely used for water because of its non-breakage properties as well as carbonated beverages because of good carbon dioxide barrier properties.
Most beverages are served in PET bottles.
RIL said its para-xylene plant is built with state-of-the-art crystallization technology from BP which is highly energy efficient.
“With the commissioning of this plant, RIL’s PX capacity has more than doubled making it world’s second largest producer of PX with about 11% of global production,” the company said.
Reliance also commissioned second phase of PX comprising of second crystallization train in April 2017.
Train 3, which was at an advanced stage of commissioning has now been successfully started.
