Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, India’s biggest manufacturer of aeroplanes and related equipment, has submitted a detailed project report for setting up an aerospace university in the country, the government said.
The university will be called ‘HAL Aerospace University’, the civil aviation ministry said in response to a query.
The university, to be set up at a cost of around Rs 100 cr, will be the first of its kind in India and is targeted at making engineers graduating from various Indian universities and institutitions more in tune with the demands of the industry.
The institution has been in various stages of planning for around five years.
With the detailed project report submitted, it has taken one more step towards realization. The next step is for the government to approve the report and give its green signal to the project.
India has several institutions that teach aeronautical engineering, but most of the graduates of these institutions lack ready employability, according to industry sources.
It is estimated that India would required about 1 mln skilled employees in this sector in the next few years as both state-owned and private companies step up investments in the field.
