Infosys to create 1,200 digital tech jobs in Australia

Infosys, the Bangalore-based technology company, announced it would create 1,200 jobs in Australia and open three new ‘innovation hubs’ by 2020.

The company said 40% of the jobs will be filled with Australian university graduates from areas like computer science and design.

This is part of the company’s efforts to broad-base its workforce by opening ‘innovation hubs’ in countries such as the US to transition its business model.

Infosys started out in the 1980s as a company that supplied skilled, low-cost engineers to companies in the US.

However, the emergence of cloud computing in the last five years has impacted the demand for IT engineers across the world, forcing firms like Infosys to invest into creating their own intellectual property such as automation platforms and processes.

These solutions, rather than large armies of engineers, are now used to help Infosys’ corporate clients cut costs and improve operations.

To get the talent required to create these hi-tech solutions, the company has been focusing on recruiting people from across the world, instead of looking primarily at the India market.

Andrew Groth, who heads Australia and New Zealand operations for Infosys, said the company has already recruited 75 graduates from Australia, and more than half of them have completed their induction training and are ready to be placed on client projects.

“The expansion of our Australian team, together with our planned Innovation Hubs are very important as we help navigate our clients in their digital journey by simultaneously renewing their core business systems and building new solutions to realise growth,” he said.

Under the program, graduates start at Infosys’ Sydney and Melbourne training centres, and can specialize in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, user experience, cyber security, cloud and big data.
