Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja, serving seven years in jail on sexual assault charges levied by his former housemaid, has received bail from the Bombay High Court.
The Court granted bail after noting that Shiney has not tried to tamper with evidence even when he was not in jail as the case was going on. He did not try to influence the victim and this has been counted in favor of releasing him on bail, the Court noted.
Shiney is in the process of appealing the lower Court’s decision announced a few days ago, imposing a stiff seven-year term on the actor.
Bombay High Court granted the bail on a surety of Rs 50,000 and has asked the actor not to leave India.
The case has seen many ups and downs due to the flip flop by the victim, a 20 year old girl from Mumbai.
After accusing Shiney of rape, in September 2010, she said the rape did not take place, but she was only molested.
Shiney has, on the basis, filed the appeal in the Bombay High Court a week ago, likely to come up for hearing later this week.
Ahuja was arrested on June 15, 2009 after medical tests on the maid confirmed sexual assault.
