The Indian Railways will install audio-video entertainment system in all its trains, starting with the day trains, the Ministry of Railways has said.
Currently, audio-video entertainment system such as those in aircrafts are available only in half a dozen trains in the country. All of these, such as the Shimoga-Bangalore Intercity Express and the Bangalore-Mysore Tippu Express, are day trains dominated by seats rather than (sleeping) berths.
The entertainment system (a small LCD TV and content) are easier to install in chair-cars rather than in sleeper cars due to the structure of the seats.
However, the ministry said “broad guidelines” have been issued to all the zonal railway authorities to install “audio/video information dissemination and entertainment system” in trains.
This will be done through an open tendering system, it added.
