The National Commission for Women — a statutory body tasked with protecting women’s rights — seems to be going after the Mayawati’s BSP government in UP again.
The Commission, which sprung into action soon after the police crack-down in Bhatta Parsaul as well — has accused Mayawati of ignoring the suffering of her people.
“We are very concerned about the actions of the UP Police,” Yasmeen Abrar, NCW chairperson said, adding that the Commission has decided to take a ‘suo motu’ (by itself) cognizance of the Lakhimpur incident and started investigation.
A 14-year-old girl is alleged to have been raped and murdered by a gang of policemen when she came to the area grazing her cattle. Her body was found on a tree in the police compound.
The NCW had, according to media reports, prepared a scathing report on the Bhatta Parsaul incident as well.
Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission, headed by former Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan, has also sought a detailed report from the UP government within four weeks on the incident.
