Reliance Jio, the latest entrant to India’s fiber broadband market, has unveiled a new Rs 199 recharge which gives fully unlimited data at a speed of 100 Mbps for one week.
This is Jio Fiber’s first truly unlimited offering.
For a full month (30.4 days), the plan will cost Rs 865, which is comparable to Jio’s Silver plan that costs Rs 849. Both exclude GST.
Including GST, the total cost of the 199 plan will be Rs 1,020 per month, and that of the Rs 849 plan will be Rs 1,002.
The new plan is aimed at those who want to use their connection primarily for accessing the Internet, and does not come with free subscriptions to content apps such as Hotstar, Sony LIV and so on.
It is also aimed at people who already have Jio set top box and modems at home, and is currently visible only to ‘logged in’ customers on their recharge page.
In other words, the plan can only be activated from the second month. For the first month, Jio Fiber users will have to buy from the company’s list of regular plans, starting at Rs 699 plus tax for the Bronze offering.
The move indicates that the company is trying to lure in customers who may not have shown a willingness to move on from its free trial service to its paid service.
The primary advantage of going for the Rs 849 Silver plan, compared to the new 199 plan, is that the Silver plan comes with three months of free subscription to all the content apps on Jio’s app store.
Plans that cost Rs 1,500 per month and above — including taxes — come with free subscriptions to content app such as Hotstar for the full term, and not just the first three months.
