After disrupting the market with its 1GB per day plans, Reliance Jio has unveiled new packs targeted at heavy users.
Two new plans have been unveiled today that were not present on the company’s website earlier — a 3GB per day plan priced at Rs 509 and a 5GB daily plan that costs Rs 799. Both plans have a validity of 4 weeks (28 days).
The two new plans are in addition to the eight plans that were announced last week.
The heavy usage plans unveiled today, however, are costlier compared to the light plans (1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 GB).
While the 1.5 GB daily packs price data in the range of Rs 3.56 to Rs 4.71 per GB, the 3 GB daily pack prices it at Rs 6.06 per GB.
Similarly, the 5GB pack prices data at Rs 5.71 per GB.
With the new plans, Jio is throwing down the gauntlet, challenging its rivals to match up.
Rivals such as Vodafone and Idea Cellular will struggle to match the packs given their lower capacity networks, while Bharti Airtel will stand a better chance thanks to the company’s copious amounts of spectrum that almost rival that of Reliance Jio.
However, comparatively poorer data backhaul capabilities will constrain Bharti Airtel’s ability to offer high-usage data plans.
The rivals are therefore unlikely to match the heavy plans, given than over 90% of the users are not interested in such schemes.
However, those that are tend to be heavy spenders and companies like Bharti Airtel are loathe to lose big spenders.
