TRAI asks RCom to generate MNP code for 4.4 mln subs; puts Oct 30 deadline

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has asked Anil Ambani-led Reliance Communications to generate unique porting codes for all its 43.62 lakh GSM subscribers in Gujarat and send it to them by SMS.

It has also granted an exemption to the 90-day lock-in rule for new customers who joined RCom or those who ported into the network in recent days.

The directions came in the context of the company shutting down its 2G GSM operations in Gujarat and continuing with only 4G services in tie-up with Reliance Jio.

It also asked RCom to respond to all MNP requests made by its subscribers till 30 October 2017.

It said RCom should take out advertisements in at least two leading dailies informing users that it is shutting down its 2G service in the state and put up a notice on its website.

The deadline for RCom’s subscribers to shift out of the network has been put at 30.10.2017.

“Mobile Number Portability Service Providers not to accept requests for porting of GSM mobile numbers of Gujarat licensed service area of Mls RCL as Donor Operator after 30.10.2017,” TRAI said.

For those who want to shift to RCom’s 4G network, the company will issue 4G compatible SIMs and also carry over the existing balance and validity as part of the migration.

RCom has obtained a new Unified License in place of its Unified Access Licence that expires at the end of September.
