AirAsia said it will offer a 15% discount to all customers of Reliance Jio for flights booked this month for travel between Jun 20 to Sep 30.
“All Reliance Jio customers get 15% off on domestic and international flights,” the airline tweeted.
The booking has to be done using the AirAsia app and is available only for flights operated by the company’s India, Thailand and main units, and not the other group entities such as those in Indonesia and Philippines, the airline said. These flights carry the IATA codes I5, AK or FD.
This would be the first such offer in India. Typically, airlines offer steep discounts and sales for short periods of time to fill up inventory and create social media buzz.
Jio is an up-and-coming telecom operator which is trying to make space for itself in India’s telecom industry, dominated by Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular.
The company has signed up over 125 mln subscriptions, though this includes many people who have subscribed to more than one connection.
It has been offering free services for nearly nine months and started paid services this month.
Air Asia, meanwhile, has run into strong competition in India from homegrown low-cost airlines such as SpiceJet and Indigo.
After a slow start, the Malaysia-based airline has recently been more aggressive with its discounts and offers.
The airline, which operates from South Indian cities, Delhi and other prominent airports in India, was in the news recently for offering flights to Thailand for less than Rs 4,000, and to Australia for Rs 13,222.
