Days after elder brother Mukesh Ambani caused an earthquake in India’s telecom space with his speech at his company’s annual general meeting, younger brother Anil is all set to address his shareholders in a few moments.
Reliance Communications is holding its annual shareholder meeting in Mumbai today.
Ambani’s speech is to be preceded by an update on the operations by Gurdip Singh, who heads the telecom business for the company.
In his speech, Singh said India has entered the second stage of telecom revolution. While last year, the average smartphone consumed only 200 mb, in a couple of years, the number could go to 2 GB per phone.
“There will be 300 mln 4G users in two years from now,” Singh said.
He said 75% of Internet consumption happens indoors, and the company must gear up to face this challenge.
“To be successful in this era versus the voice era, you need to have the right spectrum that provides good indoor coverage,” Singh added.
RCom is aggressively tying up partnerships and mergers with others like MTS and Aircel in an attempt to build up a strong spectrum profile.
In addition, it has 800 MHz spectrum across the country. “This the only spectrum (at present) that can penetrate multiple walls in the building,” Singh said.
“Spectrum coupled with fiber will remain an unbeatable combination for RCom for years to come,” he added.
RCom has seen a decrease of millions in the number of active customers that the company has after it transitioned from CDMA technology to 4G LTE.
