Reliance Jio is rolling out 1 Gbps fiber-to-home connections in “select cities”, Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries said today.
“We will progressively roll this out to top 100 cities,” he added.
The official launch of Jio is on Sep 5, and it’s possible that fiber too will be unveiled for sale on that day.
Ambani, however, did not give a timeline, either for the initial rollout or the planned expansion.
Fiber to home is eagerly awaited, especially in cities like Mumbai and Delhi as wireless is an impractical solution to meet home broadband needs in congested areas.
Jio has been giving free fiber connectivity to chosen apartment complexes in these cities for a couple of years now.
Ambani’s speech indicates that these services will become commercial by the end of this year.
Separately, Ambani also unveiled tariffs for the new 4G service that is also being rolled out.
