SC asks auto dealers to pay 1% environment cess on big diesel cars

The Supreme Court has directed all manufacturers and dealers of Delhi & National Capital region selling diesel cars with engine capacity of 2000 cc and above, to pay 1% Environment Protection Charge.

Supreme Court’s instructions came in the matter of M.C Mehta vs Union Vehicular Pollution Case: Diesel Emission) of India on Environment Protection Charge.

Central Pollution Control Board has been directed by Supreme Court to open a separate account for this purpose in a Scheduled Public Sector bank.

Central Pollution Control Board has opened an account for this purpose in Union Bank of India and has asked manufacturers/dealers to to provide details like Vehicle Identification Number and Dealer details to be mentioned in pay-in-slip at the bank counter.

Last year in New Delhi,The Supreme Court had temporarily banned the sale of large diesel vehicles which had triggered strong protests from car manufacturers.
