Street children to soon get Aadhaar cards – Maneka Gandhi

aadhaarThe Women and Child Development Ministry will be start a new initiative for providing birth certificates and Aadhaar Cards to street children, women and child welfare minister Maneka Gandhi said.

Gandhi was speaking at a function organized by NGO Dayaa Foundation established by Rajanikanth’s wife Latha.

Aadhaar is a unique identification project started by the Manmohan Singh government and implemented under Nandan Nilekani. It serves as a identifier for all residents and is crucial for getting benefits under various government schemes and projects.

However, many underprivileged people find it difficult to secure an Aadhar number due to the requirement for paperwork.

The Minister appreciated the recently launched initiative of Dayaa Foundation to establish a Citizen Council for child safety, which will be the first of its kind initiative of bringing citizens together for protecting children.

Maneka  Gandhi also spoke about the measures being taken by Government for safety, protection and care of children including the children’s helpline i.e. Childline, initiative with railways on missing children, the new Juvenile Justice Act, New Foster Care programme and complete reform of Adoption System.
