SpiceJet starts Kolkata-Dhaka flight, more to follow

SpiceJet said it will start daily flights to Dhaka from Kolkata on Mar 23, its first to the Bangladeshi capital, and said it plans to introduce more international flights soon.

With the Dhaka service, the total number of international destinations served by the company has reached seven.

Last month, the airline announced a deal to buy 205 Boeing planes worth $22 billion, the largest such order in Indian aviation history.

“With our much awaited mega Boeing deal finally concluded the time is now ripe for SpiceJet to eye new markets and boost connectivity,” said Ajay Singh – CMD, SpiceJet Ltd. “As we work towards placing more aircraft into our fleet; we will aggressively look at newer and enhanced connections in both the regional and international markets.”

The airline is the fourth largest in India and has a passenger market share of about 13%.

Booking for the new route has started at Rs 3,549, all in, for Kolkata – Dhaka flight and 4,325 taka for the return flight, the company said.

Dhaka is the second international destination after Bangkok that the airline will be serving with a direct daily flight from Kolkata.

The flight will depart from Kolkata at 6.10 am to arrive at Dhaka at 7:30 am. The return flight SG 72 will depart from Dhaka at 8:15 am to reach Kolkata at 8:30 am.

From 26 Mar, the Kolkata departure time will move to 7:10 am and the return flight will start at 9:20 am.
