India becomes only country to have 1000 Domino’s Pizza outside the US

dominosDomino’s Pizza, the most popular pizza chain in India, crossed the 1,000 restaurant milestone today with the opening of its outlet in Unity One Mall, Janakpuri, New Delhi.

The total number of cities covered has gone up to 227, making it the biggest food chain in the country. According to Euro Monitor Consumer Food Service Report, 2015, Domino’s has a whopping 72% share of the pizza market in India.

With the 1000th restaurant, India joins the USA — home country of Domino’s Pizza where the brand has been operating since 1960 – to become the only other country with over 1000 restaurants.

Domino’s Pizza is present in over 80 countries and the Indian operations are the largest outside of the US. The modern pizza was invented in Naples, Italy, and the dish and its variants have since become popular in many areas of the world.

Branded pizza can come as cheap as Rs 35 ($0.54) in India.

Domino’s Pizza outlets and restaurants in India are operated by Jubilant FoodWorks Limited, which is also the franchisee for Dunkin’ Donuts in the country. It runs 67 Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants across 23 cities in India.

“When we first brought the brand to the country, almost two decades back, there was no Pizza culture in the country. A sot has changed in the past twenty years, except the undying resolve of the ever-growing Jubilant FoodWorks family,” said Shyam S. Bhartia, Chairman of Jubilant FoodWorks Ltd.

Domino’s Pizza has aggressively strengthened its presence in tier II and tier III cities in the past few years.

“Jubilant FoodWorks team is focused on further catalysing the expansion process to make Domino’s Pizza the most loved brand in the country,” the Indian franchisee said.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. J. Patrick Doyle, President and CEO, Domino’s Pizza, said, “India is a key market for Domino’s Pizza and having reached the milestone of 1000 restaurants is a remarkable achievement by the Domino’s team in India.”
