English Vinglish, the story of a meek Indian housewife who finds herself at sea in the US, seems to have hit a chord with audiences in Japan.
The Sridevi starrer, continued to rake in the moolah in the Asian nation, with $1 million (Rs 6 crore) and still counting.
It has become the second highest grossing Hindi film in Japan. The film was released across 33 screens in Japan on 28th June this year.
The highest grossing Hindi film in Japan was 3 Idiots. The film had grossed 170,000,000 yen, or about $1.6 million.
“With an overwhelming response from the audiences and theatres packed to capacity, the film released in another 17 odd screens additionally, taking the total screen count to 50 in across 20 cities in Japan,” Eros International, the distributor of English Vinglish, said.
“I am flattered with all the love and affection the film continues to receive,” said Sridevi.
The film has also met with unprecedented success in other territories like Hong Kong, Germany, Taiwan and Korea, said Eros.
