Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest car maker, reported a 19.2% increase in May auto sales, boosted by strong exports and a pickup in the sales of mid-range compact cars such as Swift and Ritz.
Total sales in May was 1,00,925 units, out of which exports accounted for 10,365. Exports for May were up 51.2%.
Domestic sales were up 16.4% at 90,560 units in May.
Passenger car sales were up 12.4% at 74,536, while utility car and van sales were up about 40%.
The smallest cars continued to see poor demand, with the Mini segment, that includes the 800, Alto, A-Star and WagonR posting a decline of 7.5% in May to 29,068 units.
The mid-segment, on the other hand, saw sales rise 53.9% to 26,394 units.
