Rajinikanth starrer ‘Kochadaiiyaan – The Legend’ seems to be on its way to being a profitable venture for its producer, with opening weekend collection of Rs 42 crore, according to Eros International, distributor of the movie.
The film, directed by Soundarya Rajnikanth Ashwin, was produced at a cost of Rs 125 crore.
Kochadaiiyaan’s collection is on similar lines as Ram Leela, which collected around Rs 110 crore by the end of its fourth week of release. Last year’s biggest hit was Dhoom 3, which grossed more than Rs 200 crore in all.
Kochadaiiyaan means the king with a long, curly mane. Made in 3D, the film stars Deepika Padukone, R. Sarathkumar, Aadhi, Shobana, Rukmini Vijayakumar, Jackie Shroff and Nassar.
The film is the story of a legendary warrior, Kochadaiiyaan, who lives in Kottaipatinam and his son, Rana. Rishikodagan, the Maharaja of Kottaipatinam (Nassar) starts feeling jealous of his trusted army commander, Kochadaiiyaan’s popularity in his kingdom.
It has got mixed reviews, with some saying that it failed to live up to the hype, while others called it yet another great film from ‘Thalaivar’.
Eros International released the film in 2D and 3D on May 23rd 2014, in 6 languages in over 3,000 screens worldwide.
The Photorealistic performance Capture technology film grossed Rs. 30 crore in India and Rs. 12 crore overseas, Eros said.
“Markets with Rajni stronghold like UAE, Malaysia and Singapore have shown superlative performance. With pre-sales from satellite rights in multiple languages, audio and music rights exploitation, brand tie ups and other income, the film is well on its way to cross Rs 100 in revenue just after the opening weekend.”
