Taslima Nasreen, who was forced to leave Bangladesh after religious fundamentalists there objected to her writings, has accused ‘pseudo secular’ liberals in her host country India of being complacent about the threat of Islamist fundamentalist in India.
“ISIS has planned to take over India by 2020. Pseudo-secular Indians might say, Atithi Devo Bhava,” Nasreen tweeted today.
Atithi Devo Bhava is an ancient Indian saying that translates to the guest is akin to god.
Nasreen has often been accused to encouraging Hindu fundamentalism in India with her comments, a charge that she has denied.
She continues to maintain that she is a liberal and is against all fundamentalism, whether Islamist or Hindu.
“I criticise all religions, including Hinduism. I opposed Hindu godmen, rituals such as karva chauth and shivaratri, and condemned the oppression of Muslims in Gujarat. I donated Rs.10,000 to poet Shankha Ghosh, who was collecting funds for rehabilitating Gujarat riot victims,” she said in an interview with The Hindu earlier this year.
Hindu right wing groups have been the most vocal about the threat of Islamist fundamentalism in India.
