Maruti Suzuki´s utility vehicle sales doubled in October, riding on the launch of new models like Vitara Brezza and S-Cross.
The SUV (utility vehicle) sales increased 90.9 % to 18,008 vehicles in the month compared with last year.
This is a continuation of the trends seen in recent months.
So far in this financial year, the SUV segment — which includes Ertiga and Gypsy in addition to the two new models — has more than doubled its sales to 1.1 lakh from 46,068 last year.
Much of the growth has come from the addition of S-Cross and Vitara Brezza.
Meanwhile, mid-segment sedan Ciaz continues to do moderately well, selling 6,360 units in October versus 5,890 last year in the same month.
Despite the strong sales in the new models, continued decline in the sale of Alto and WagonR dragged down Maruti Suzuki’s performance in the month.
Total sales were hardly changed, when compared with the same month last year. In comparison, Volkswagen India reported a 70% jump in the number of cars sold in October.
Maruti remains the No. 1 car maker in the country and sold a total of 1.34 lakh units in the month. Exports, at 10,029 units, were down 24% compared to last year.
The super compact model Dzire Tour in passenger car segment showed a 27.4% decline to 2481 units.
The mini segment sales has decreased by 9.8% to 33929 as the demand for Alto and WagonR has gone downwards in recent times.
Passenger car segment is low by 5.2% from 97951 units same month last year. But domestic passenger vehicle sales and domestic sales has reported an increase of 2.2%.
The total sales of domestic and export has also showed an increase by 8.7% till October FY17 from same period last financial year.
