Close on the order for erection of turbine generator for the new units of Koodankulam Power Project, state-owned capital goods giant Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) said it has also won the order for erecting reactor side equipment for the same.
Against a value of Rs 440 cr for the June order, this one is valued at Rs 486 cr.
“This is the first time BHEL is lending its capabilities for erection of reactor side equipment manufactured by another supplier,” it said, adding that the deal will add to its competence and reputation in carrying out nuclear power related projects.
Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant is scheduled to have six VVER-1000 reactors built in collaboration with Atomstroyexport, the Russian state company and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), with an installed capacity of 6,000 MW of electricity.
Two of the units are already producing power, helping to meet demand in the power-hungry state of Tamil Nadu.
BHEL is already one of the most prolific construction and erection firms in other sectors such as coal.
BHEL has won several nuclear power related contracts from the Nuclear Power Corporation of India.
For example, 12 out of 18 operating Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) in the country are equipped with BHEL-supplied steam turbine generator sets, accounting for 74% of the installed capacity.
BHEL is also currently executing turbine generator packages for 4 units of 700 MWe, 2 units each at Kakrapar and Rawatbhata.
