India will see the launch of yet another big smartphone this week – the 6-inch Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 – priced at just Rs 21,000.
It will be one of the cheapest phones from Samsung in the 5.5-inch-plus category, and will compete against HTC Desire 820q (5.5-inch, Rs 22,500) and the LG G3 Stylus (price Rs 20,000.)
India will be among the, if not the, first country in which the Mega 2 is launching, apart from Indonesia and Cambodia. Part of the reason may be Diwali, which falls next week, and part would be decisions by competitors to target the India market with large-screen launches this month.
Unlike in 2013, when the Mega was priced at Rs 31,500, the Galaxy Mega 2 will be priced around the Rs 21,000 mark.
However, in return, fans will have to put up with extremely mid-range features such as 1.5 GB of RAM and a 720p display with a 245 PPI resolution (1280 * 720 pixels).
Internal memory too remains the same at 16 GB, while the camera resolution has also been kept the same as before, 8 megapixel. The processor will be the mid-range Exynos 4415.
The only big difference between the Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 and other mid-range offerings from Samsung such as the Grand 2 is the display size. At 6 inches, it will be one of the biggest phones in India, and similar in size to the G3 Pro and the Ultra series from Sony.
The first model being launched in India will come with just 3G and no 4G. Samsung is also known to have a 4G-enabled version of this phone.
The phone’s pricing might clash with that of the older Mega. The 1.5-year-old Galaxy Mega 1 (5.8 inch) is still selling for Rs 21,000 in the Indian market.
The Mega 2 may also eat into the market share of the Galaxy Grand 2, priced Rs 18,500 and with a 5.25-inch display.
HTC yesterday announced that it would start selling the much-awaited Desire 820q and Desire 820 – both of which will have very very similar specifications to the Galaxy Mega 2.
However, in terms of processor capacity, the HTC models may actually be superior as one of them comes with the first octa-core processor from Qualcomm, while the Mega 2 is likely to be powered by a slightly less powerful chip to keep prices low.
