Dell zoomed to the top of India’s PC market in the first quarter of 2014 as enterprise orders, particularly government procurement, dried up and consumer market became dominant.

The overall PC market fell 21% year on year, but notebook sales jumped 43%.

Dell grew by 44 percent, particularly in consumer segment.

HP and Acer saw market share declines, while Lenovo also saw an increase in its market share in India during the quarter. The share of small brands and unbranded PCs fell sharply from 37% to 32%, largely because of the shift towards notebooks.

Dell increased its market share in 1Q14 due to strong growth in notebooks.

The combined desk-based and mobile PC market in India totalled nearly 1.9 million units in the first quarter of 2014, a 20.6 percent decrease over the first quarter of 2013, according to Gartner, Inc.

“Consumers accounted for 47 percent of total PC sales in the first quarter of 2014,” said Vishal Tripathi, principal research analyst at Gartner.

“In the absence of any government orders this quarter, the Indian PC market performed dismally, re-emphasizing the fact that sentiments were not very positive in the first quarter of 2014, and enterprises are deferring their purchases. However, with new government leadership, there is a positive sentiment both among and enterprises and consumers, and we expect markets to bounce back in the next two quarters.”

White boxes (including parallel imports), which accounted for 39 percent of the overall desktop market, declined 7 percent in the first quarter of 2014 compared to the same period last year. In the first quarter, mobile PCs declined 32 percent year-on-year due to a lack of government sales.
