Uninor launches India’s cheapest talk plan in Mumbai

Uninor has launched India’s cheapest talk plan — all calls at 25 paise per minute — in its Mumbai circle.

Customers will have to pay Rs 49 per month as monthly rental for the plan through an easy recharge.

Earlier Videocon used to have a similar plan.

Uninor’s offer is without any monthly limit on usage. In some other circles, Uninor offers 25 paise per minute plan, but with a cap of 300-500 minutes per month.

Uninor is “the only GSM operator in the city to provide the cheapest talk time plan without any restrictions at just Rs. 49,” the company, a unit of Norway’s Telenor, said.

In comparison, operators like Tata DoCoMo, Idea Cellular and MTS offer 1-paise-per-2-seconds plan, which effectively comes to about 28 paise per minute.

The cost of running a mobile network, per consumer, is much lower in a city like Mumbai where the population density is much higher than almost anywhere in the world. As a result, operators are able to offer the cheapest rates in such congested cities.

“One India and one call rate is our effort to bridge the STD and local call gap and provide one flat rate to our customers. The initial mindset of the public was that STD calls are always more expensive than local and customers were judicious in making that call back home or planned it according to the time of day. We want our customers to focus on their conversations rather than the call charge. Recharge today and call your friends in Mumbai or talk to your loved ones anywhere in India at just 25p/min with Uninor’s STV 49,” Upanga Dutta, Circle Business Head of Uninor for Mumbai, said.

Uninor added the second most number of subscribers across Mumbai with more than 34,967 new customers embracing Uninor services in May 2012 (as per COAI May 2012 report). Uninor’s total subscriber base across the circle.
