Yu Televentures, the sister company of Micromax, will launch its most expensive ‘flagship killer’ phone – Yutopia – at an event in Delhi on Monday on Dec 17.
The phone, which was supposed to be launched at an event on Monday has been delayed by ten days, company founder Rahul Sharma said in a tweet.
“Hold your excitement, as we plan to announce something special with YUTOPIA. The most powerful phone now launches on 17th Dec,” he said
The device will have 4 GB of RAM and a large-screen QHD display, and is expected to be priced at Rs 24,999.
The exact size of the smartphone is not known yet, with some claiming that it would be 5.2 inches and others that it would be 5.5 inches.
However, most of the other specifications of Yu Yutopia have already been leaked by the company itself.
The highlight of the phone will include, besides its QHD display and 4 GB of RAM, 32 GB of built-in memory and Snapdragon 810 chipset.
It would also feature an all-metal build for ‘premium’ looks — in keeping with its price — and support quick charging.
When launched, the phone will be the cheapest in India to sport a QHD display other than the 2014 Moto Nexus 6, which is also available at Rs 24,999. The Nexus 6 has a 6-inch AMOLED display of the same resolution, but comes with 3 GB of RAM and 32-bit Snapdragon 805 chipset, which would be slightly less powerful than the 810.
The primary competitor for the Yutopia would be Chinese smartphones such as the OnePlus Two and the newly launched QiKU Terra 810 made by Coolpad.
Like the Yu device, the QiKU Terra 810 also comes with a full-HD display, 4 GB of RAM and the Snapdragon 810 processor. It is powered by a 3.6 Ah battery, while the Yutopia is expected to have only a 3 Ah unit.
While the low screen resolution (2 MP vs 4 MP on Yutopia) is likely to disappoint, the price of the QiKU Terra 810 should offer some comfort. The phone will be available at Rs 19,999 for those who register and join the queue.
Meanwhile, Yu too has set up a queue system for selling its latest and greatest phone and already over 10,000 people have registered, according to reports.
The Yutopia will also have to deal with the Samsung Galaxy A9 (expected price of around Rs 34,000) and the new Galaxy A7, which is estimated to carry a tag of Rs 26,000. Both of these phones are scheduled to hit Indian markets later this month. It should, however, be noted that both of these will have full-HD AMOLED displays.
Yu is an attempt by the owners of Micromax to ride the online shopping trend.
Unlike Micromax, Yu sells its phones only online. This helps its cut its dealer and distributor margin to a few hundred rupees from a few thousand.
Lenovo, which pioneered this practice in India along with Xiaomi, is yet to address the high-end market with this strategy. It is expected to launch its Vibe X3 later this month at a price of around Rs 19,999 in India. However, like QiKU Terra 810, the Lenovo Vibe X3 will also come with a full-HD display.
