Idea Cellular added the highest number of subscribers in June, according to numbers released by Cellular Operators’ Association of India.
Idea added 1.62 mln subscribers in June, which more than four times as many as Vodafone added in the same month.
The runner up was Bharti Airtel, which added 1.22 mln. Uninor followed as a distant third with 0.42 mln subscribers added in June.
Vodafone was No. 4 at 0.39 mln new users, while Aircel added 0.31 mln.
The numbers are likely to disappoint Vodafone, which is the No. 2 operator in India.
However, Idea, the No. 3, has been the most aggressive of the three and has been gaining at the expense of the other two for many quarters.
Idea is dominant in many high growth circles, while Vodafone and Airtel are dominant in low-growth, high-income areas like Mumbai and Delhi.
As a result, Vodafone and Airtel get more revenue per user compared to Idea. However, the Aditya Birla firm has been closing the gap with the help of 3G and soon, 4G services.
