Charu Deshpande Death: Court to hear bail plea of accused on Wednesday

The bail plea of Prabhat Sharma, the Tata Steel official who has been booked for abetment to suicide, will come up for hearing in the Vasai sessions court on the outskirts of Mumbai tomorrow.

The case was filed after Charu Deshpande, an ex-journalist who joined Tata Steel, committed suicide. It has been alleged that he was put under pressure by others in the company, leading to the incident.

With the constant intervention of the Mumbai Press Club, an FIR was finally registered in the Charu Deshpande case against Tata Steel official Prabhat Sharma under sec. 306 of the IPC for abetment of suicide in late November.

The Thane Rural police, which are investigating the case, made a slow start but thereafter dispatched a posse to Jamshedpur a few days ago. The DY SP Prashant Deshpande, who led the team, interrogated over 20 suspects and witnesses, and has returned to Mumbai today.

The police are likely to seek custodial interrogation of the suspect.

The Press Club has briefed two advocates to watch the case.

Tata Steel had instituted a committee to inquire into the matter. The committee was set up by Chairman of Tata group Cyrus Mistry after several senior journalists, including the Press Club President, wrote to him raising concern.
