Google has tied up with Government of India’s National Museum and National Gallery of Modern Art to enable web-users to virtually enter and browse through Indian museums online.
The tie-up will enable users to discover and view more than a thousand artworks of Indian and global artists in both the museums, online, Google said.
Google said the partnership is part of a major global expansion of the project, which now counts 151 partners in 40 countries. Globally more than 30,000 high resolution objects are available and Street View images cover 46 Museums, with more on the way.
Images using street view technology are displayed in fine quality and users may browse the content by the artist’s name, the artwork, the type of art, the museum, the country, collections and the time period.
Like in case of Street Views, a specially designed Street View ‘trolley’ took 360 degree images of the interior of selected galleries which were then stitched together, enabling smooth navigation of over 385 rooms within the museums. The gallery interiors can also be explored directly from within Street View in Google Maps, Google added.
The product, available on googleartproject.com, also has a “super high resolution feature”. Under this artworks are photographed in extraordinary detail using super high resolution or ‘gigapixel’ photo capturing technology.
“Each such image contains around 7 billion pixels, enabling the viewer to study details of the brushwork and patina beyond that possible with the naked eye,” Google said.
Radha and Krishna in the boat of love” from the National Museum and “Santiniketan Triptych” currently housed at the National Gallery of Modern Art can be enjoyed in ‘gigapixel’ super high resolutions thus revealing their fine-grain details beyond what is visible to the naked eye.
Google already has a Street View product for major Indian cities, that allows users to ‘go down’ to the street level and take a virtual tour using digitally stitched photographs of Indian streets.
