Blackberry Torch 9810, second of the new Powerberries, launched in India at price of 29,749

Days after launching the first of the new line-up of powerful candy-bar Blackberry phones, online e-tailer Letsbuy has now become the first to launch the Blackberry Torch 9810, first slider Blackberry phone built on the new platform. The Blackberry Torch 9810’s price in India is Rs 29,749.

The Blackberry Torch 9810 is one of the three new phones launched by Blackberry a month ago as part of its efforts to revamp its line-up globally.

The three new phones represented the form-factors in which Blackberry is present. The Blackberry Bold 9900 (already launched) represented the traditional form-factor — a candy-bar shaped phone with a large 2.8 inch display, while the 3.7 inch Torch 9850 represented the full-touch variety with a large 3.7 inch display and no physical keypad.

Today’s launch is the one in between. At 3.2 inch, the Blackberry Torch 9810 has a display bigger than the 9900 (2.8) but smaller than the 9950. However, unlike the 9950, it has a vertical physical keypad that can be slid out from under the phone when needed (slider).

All three phones have pretty much the same specifications. For example, they all run 1.2 GHz processors, have separate (discrete) graphics processors to handle the funky animations of the new Blackberry 7 operating system and have high-speed 3G HSPA (14.4 Mbps.)

They also record 720p HD video, have high resolution displays, 5 megapixel cameras and 768 MB of RAM (one of the highest in the industry). In short, by specifications, the new Blackberry line-up are among the most powerful phones available today.

Not surprisingly, they have seen a good reception in the US and elsewhere. RIM, the firm that makes the phones, is betting its future on the three models (along with their CDMA variants) after having being almost written off by some analysts for failing to come up with exciting models.
