Most requests are for non-voting discussion on Lokpal – Meira Kumar

The Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar said she has received 7 to 8 proposals from the members of the house to hold discussions on the Lokpal issue.

However, most of the requests, including those from senior congress leaders like Jagdambika Pal and Sandeep Dikshit are calling for a no-vote discussion, while two private members have requested for discussion followed by a voting process.

Discussion under section 184, which requires voting, is likely to send a stronger message as it shows the exact nature of support for the motion in numerical terms.

Anna has already demanded that the Parliament should pass a resolution calling stating the exact nature of the Lokpal that its committee should come out with. Government, on the other hand, has been keen on merely a debate, followed by an instruction to the committee to make a “strong Lokpal” without specifying any condition.

The Speaker said she will announce her decision on when these motions will be allowed soon.
