BJP hits back at anti-Gadkari comments, calls Congress victim of ‘darbari’ culture

BJP general secretary Ravi Shankar Prasad has hit back at Congress for questioning the qualification of Nitin Gadkari to occupy the seat of the BJP President. The Congress had questioned Gadkari’s qualification to talk about election and democracy pointing out that he was just a normal worker affiliated to the RSS before being elevated to the position of BJP President.

“The leaders of the Congress have grown up in a culture of royal (dynastic) succession.. where only the members of one family can ever seek to become the president of the party,” he said, referring to the family of Pandit Nehru, whose descendants continue to rule the Congress party.

He characterised the comments against Gadkari as sub-standard and the result of pent-up frustration in the Congress party. The Congress, he pointed out, has been hemmed in from all sides by protests and allegations.

On the one hand, the Supreme Court is turning the screws on the government on the issue of corruption, while mass protests by a politically independent Gandhian, Anna Hazare, has caught the imagination and political participation of the Indian middle class.

Law minister Veerappa Moily had called Gadkari a “pygmy” while Congress spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan called BJP chief ministers as “fascists and little despots”

Gadkari had earlier said that Sonia talking about fighting corruption was like Pakistan claiming to fight terror.
